The county could see up to $159,000 over the next 25 years simply from leasing land at the Law Enforcement Center to CommNet Cellular for a Verizon Wireless tower.
The supervisors at their Sept. 17 meeting approved a land lease agreement with CommNet. The initial contract is for five years at a cost of $6,000 per year, with the contract renewing automatically for four additional five-year terms for a total of 25 years.
CommNet will pay the county $6,000 per year, with an additional one-time payment of $9,000 for the county’s equipment mounted at the top of the tower.
County sheriff Jack Williams worked with CommNet Cellular on the project. County assistant Thomas Laehn reviewed the agreement prior to the supervisors’ approval.
Under the “Reports” portion of the agenda, county environmental health and zoning officer Chuck Wenthold reported he and supervisor Peter Bardole spoke with the Jefferson city council to discuss the proposed urban renewal district required to use tax increment financing for the career academy. Wenthold and supervisor Mick Burkett attended the Grand Junction city council meeting, and supervisors John Muir and Dawn Rudolph attended the Paton council meeting for the same purpose.
At the meetings, the city councils were provided with a draft map showing the proposed urban renewal district. GreeneCountyNewsOnline asked Wenthold where the draft map was available to the public for viewing, as most documents provided to elected bodies become public documents.
Wenthold answered the map will be posted to the county website when it is finalized, probably at the end of the September when the plan is finished and a date is set for the required public hearing.
